Bridgeport welcomes GumdropSwap Kids Boutique!

GumdropSwap’s Grand Opening Celebration

Downtown Bridgeport welcomes the addition of the hip children’s boutique, GumdropSwap, located in the restored Arcade Mall at 1001 Main St. The owner, Gabby Fludd, is ready to introduce this unique shopping destination to the parents in the area.

On Saturday, May 22, 2010 from 12pm-4pm there will be a kid-friendly Grand Opening Event featuring refreshments and fashion show at 2pm. Store hours are Mon-Sat 10am-4pm or by appointment. Customers can call 1-800-385-6080 or email with questions.

“This boutique is such a gem in Fairfield County. It’s something I would expect to see in New York City,” said Paula Rogers of Trumbull. “I found so many cute outfits for my granddaughter. I bought a membership for my son so he can swap the clothes my granddaughter has already outgrown. It’s such a great concept!” Gumdrop Swap sells affordably priced clothing  (less than $25) new and gently used kids clothing and accessories from sizes 0-16. There is a nice selection of name brand clothing and many items still have the original tags. Gabby makes sure to accept the highest quality in used items and infuses her inventory with new items often so her customers have gift-giving options. Parents can buy a membership for 3 months or 1 year which gives them a discount of up to 40% off the already affordable retail prices. And members can swap their gently used kids clothes, shoes, and accessories for store credits and then use the credits to buy the things their children need now. Memberships start at $14.99/mo (details on the website). Customers are encouraged to bring in damaged or heavily worn garments instead of throwing them away. Gabby repurposes the salvageable fabric of donated items into apparel, accessories and baby quilts. “I make every effort to keep anything of use out of landfills by upcycling or donating to charity. GumdropSwap is a recycling program. When someone donates clothing, we make every effort to reuse, distribute, or repurpose.”

Gabby Fludd started GumdropSwap as a swapping club in 2009 after being downsized from her job as a Graphic Designer. With a reduced income, she had to find a creative way to get stylish clothes for her growing child. She figured other parents were experiencing this problem during the recession and GumdropSwap was born. The response was so big that she quickly outgrew the borrowed office space and a retail store was necessary. The beautiful restoration of the Arcade Mall in downtown Bridgeport convinced her to join the revitalization efforts. “The natural light pouring in from the glass atrium roof was breathtaking” said Ms. Fludd. “I knew this was where my boutique had to be.”

The first 65 families will receive a a free Family Pass or child’s pass to Beardsley Zoo. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP online at Gumdropswap.
